Although the name of acne rosacea is similar to that of regular acne, the former is a much more serious disorder. The risk group of rosacea consists of individuals with a history of a particularly severe course of acne during adolescence who are at the same time frequently exposed to adverse external factors such as low temperatures or high UV radiation levels.

An additional factor contributing to the development of rosacea may consist in pale complexion susceptible to capillary breakage. Rosacea may also be a symptom of more serious gastrointestinal disorders, its onset being one of the indicators of gastric ulcers. Another cause of this type of facial skin lesions may consist in arterial hypertension. Rosacea may also be caused by allergic reactions to pollens or mites as well as certain foods (mainly hot spices).

Symptoms of rosacea are usually easy to diagnose. Initially, facial erythema develops at the age of 20-30 years, including symptoms typical for couperose skins (dilated vessels known as spider veins). Rosacea symptoms are observed mainly within the central parts of the face, and therefore itching and burning may be experienced on and around the nose.

The most common cases of rosacea are associated with changes in epidermal structure caused by the hypertrophy of damaged sebaceous glands – the swelling and accumulation of pustulae may change the external shape of the nose. The disorder becomes fully developed during the middle age (40-50 years).

The treatment of rosacea is quite complicated. The earlier the treatment is initiated, the better, as the changes caused by glandular blockage may be stopped at the early stage.

The treatment involves administration of anti-inflammatory and circulation-enhancing products. Cryosurgery and dermabrasion are also effective at the advanced stage of the disorder. State-of-the-art CO2 laser therapy is also an invaluable tool. Appropriate prophylaxis, however, is equally important since individuals at risk of rosacea are sensitive to all strong and drying agents contained in facial care products.
