Fungal infections of skin and nails

Fungal infections of skins may be caused by dermatophytes or yeasts. Athlete’s foot is the most common mycosis reported by patients at medical offices; according to the estimates, it may affect as much as one third of the global population. Unfortunately, athlete’s foot is still a taboo disease due to the common belief of its being due to inappropriate hygiene. In fact, it may be due to numerous factors including excessive hygiene. A specialist consultation is crucial in the treatment.

Symptoms of fungal infections

Depending on the type of infection, symptoms and natural histories of the disorders may vary. Infection may occur e.g. at a swimming pool or sauna, as well as while fitting shoes in a shop or while wearing wrong type of shoes. Fungal infections of skin and nails may also be caused by fungi continuously present on the human skin. In such cases, the disorder may be caused by reduced systemic immunity, e.g. due to stress and hormonal disturbances. Typical symptoms of fungal infection include blistering erythema, skin scaling, and itching.

How to treat fungal infections?

The most crucial element consists in proper diagnosis. For this purpose, mycological evaluations should be performed. The test material may consist in hair, scale, nail scraping. The results may take time to develop. Depending on the purpose of the examination, they may be obtained after 2 days to 2 weeks. This may be somewhat discouraging, but it allows for identification of an efficient treatment modality. Attempts at treating fungal infections on your own may be unsuccessful and may preclude subsequent verification of the original type of disorder. The treatment of fungal infections of skin and nails may include the use of topical products, oral medications, as well as appropriate hygienic measures. Depending on the type, the treatment may last several days to six months. Systematicity and compliance with doctor’s recommendations are very important.
